The LIWA Wrestler of the Week, for the week ending February 26, 2023, is 285 lb. junior, Sebastian Regis of East Islip HS.

After steamrolling his way through Suffolk County, Regis (2nd NYS D1, 2022), entered the NYS Tournament as the #2 seed.  He recorded 3 victories (2 first period falls) to set up a showdown with Stephan Monchery of Middletown-IX.  This would be a rematch of the Eastern States final where Regis suffered his only blemish of the season and was pinned in under a minute.  This time, Regis returned the favor and stuck Monchery in the 2nd period!

The first LIWA Wrestler of the Week, for the week ending February 14, 2023, is 126 lb. junior, Joseph Clem of Wantagh HS.

Clem (3rd NYS D1/ranked #3 Sec. VIII) was 4-0 at the Section VIII Championships.  This included 2 pins as well as a wins over Joseph Manfredi, Herricks (2022 NYS 1st) and Ray Adams, Long Beach (2022 NYS 4th).  Clem was voted the Outstanding Wrestler and the Champion of Champions!

The second LIWA Wrestler of the Week, for the week ending February 14, 2023, is 126 lb. 7th grader, Camryn Howard of Bellport HS.
Howard (ranked 2nd Sec. XI) went 4-0 at the Section XI Championships to claim the crown over a very deep bracket that included 3 returning All County wrestlers.
He also became the second wrestler to ever win the Section XI tournament as a 7th grader (Jesse Jantzen-SWR, 91 lbs. 1995).

The LIWA Wrestler of the Week, for the week ending February 5, 2023, is 110 lb. 7th grader, Julianna Hernandez of Newfield HS.
At the League 3 Tournament, Hernandez recorded two close victories to claim 1st place at 110 lbs. and become the first female to be a League Champion in the history of Section XI wrestling!

The LIWA Wrestler of the Week, for the week ending January 29, 2023, is 120 lb. junior, Ashley Diaz of Seaford HS.

On Friday, coming in as the #2 seed, Diaz recorded four falls to capture the NYSPHSAA Girls Invitational Championship.  This included a stunning pin in the finals over #1 seed/Eastern States Champion, Brooke Tarshis of Pine Bush.  Then, on Saturday, in the State Dual Meet Championships, Diaz scored a major decision in the final match of Seaford’s dual with Saugerties to secure the win for the Vikings!

The LIWA Wrestler of the Week, for the week ending January 22, 2023, is 145 lb. senior, Kevin Vides of John Glenn HS.

In the finals of the Suffolk Dual Meet Tournament, John Glenn was pitted against Port Jefferson in a back-and-forth battle.  Vides (2nd Section XI D2/ranked #3) was called upon to bump up to 152, and he delivered with a first period pin to clinch the dual title for the Knights!

The LIWA Wrestler of the Week, for the week ending January 15, 2023, is 110 lb. 8th grader, Gavin Mangano of Shoreham-Wading River HS.

Mangano won 7 matches this past week, including 5 victories at the Eastern States Classic to be crowned champion at 110 lbs.  This included wins over the #1 and #2 seeds (both 3rd place finishers in NYS in 2022).

The LIWA Wrestler of the Week, for the week ending January 8, 2023, is 118 lb. junior, Anthony Clem of Wantagh HS.

Clem (3rd Section VIII D1/ranked #1), was 5-0 on the week, including 2 impressive wins at the Patrick J. Butler Duals at Seaford.  He won by major decision over returning Nassau finalist, Angel Banegas, of Uniondale and defeated returning state champion, Dunia Sibomana, of Long Beach.  His victory helped the #2 ranked Warriors to upend the #1 ranked Marines.

The LIWA Wrestler of the Week, for the week ending January 1, 2023, is 132 lb. junior, Mikey Giugliano of Miller Place HS.

Giugliano (3rd Section XI D1/ranked #2), recorded eight wins at the Mid-Hudson Tournament to capture 1st place and OW honors.  His dominant weekend included 6 pins, a technical fall, and a win in the finals over 2022 Section XIII runner-up, Ariel Waldman of Hewlett.

The LIWA Wrestler of the Week, for the week ending December 18, 2022, is 172 lb. senior, Robby Cunningham of Miller Place HS.

Cunningham (3rd Section XI D1/ranked #1), recorded five wins this week to remain undefeated and improve his record to 15-0.  On Saturday, at the Coach Luksik Classic Duals at Deer Park, he bumped up to 189 and defeated the #4 and #2 ranked wrestlers in the county at 189 lbs.

The LIWA Wrestler of the Week, for the week ending December 11, 2022, is 118 lb. senior, Angel Banegas of Uniondale HS.

Ranked #2 (Section VIII, D1) at 118 lbs., Banegas recorded four wins to capture 1st place in the 118A bracket at the Wrangle on the Plains. This included wins over Division II State Runner up Gabe English, 2nd in Section 2 Nico Rivera and 3rd in Section 8 Shane Dobbins.

The LIWA Wrestler of the Week, for the week ending December 3, 2022, is 172 lb. senior, Luke Anfossi of Long Beach HS.

Ranked #3 at 160 lbs., Anfossi recorded four falls to capture 1st place at the Battle at the Beach.  This included pins over the #3 and #4 ranked wrestlers at 172, as well as 2022 Section VIII Champion/#1 ranked, Noah Corwin of Wantagh
