Nassau CC Wrestler's in their First Week of Competition

This past week the Nassau Community College Wrestling team participated in the College of New Jersey Open, where many of the wrestlers had their first college wrestling experience.  Nassau had three champions, 141lbs Kodie Silvestri, 149lbs Brian Herold and 285lbs Corey James.  They also had a few wrestlers finish third, 125lbs Jonathan Murray, 133lbs Ricardo Gomez and Mike Doria (both co third place finishers) and 184lbs Jesus Cartagena.  Ricardo Gomez wrestled up a weight class and lost to Jaret Anonogus from Navy in overtime.  Nassau’s next meet is the East Stroudsburg Open.

This past week former Nassau wrestlers competed all over the country.  Former NJCAA National  Chris Notte wrestled for the first time at 125lbs and won the Central Oklahoma Championship.  Chris is currently ranked 10th for the Cowboys of Oklahoma State by the Amateur Wrestling News.  Bobby Ward, the 2009 NJCAA runner-up, opened his season with a win over Turtogtokh Luvsandorj of the Citadel 6-4, as North Carolina State won their first match of the season 21-18.  Brandon Williamson, another NJCAA National Champion, established himself as the 285lb starter at West Virginia University with two wrestle off wins.

At the Division 3 level, two former NJCAA All Americans, Steve Perez and Eduardo Delgado started their 09 season off at the Ithaca Invitational.  Steve, wrestling for SUNY Cortland, finished second while his former Nassau teammate, Eduardo Delgado, now at Hunter, finished 5th.
